Lake Oconee takes top spots in Golfweek’s annual listing of “Best Courses You Can Play”
— The Seaside Golf Course at Sea Island Golf Club is, according to Golfweek, the number one “course you can play” in Georgia.
But after that, it’s all Lake Oconee.
According to the magazine’s annual listing, the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee is the second best course you can play, Harbor Club is the third and the Oconee Course at Reynolds is fourth. The Plantation Course at Reynolds is rated the 15th best you can play.
While Great Waters has always been regarded in golfing circles as a beautiful and fun tract, Harbor Club continues to rise up the rankings, in part, by an aggressive agricultural enhancement program that has “touched every aspect of the golf course, including expanded turf conditioning practices, an upgraded irrigation system, extensive planting of flowering shrubs and trees… and new cart paths and sand bunkers…,” a press release announcing the improved ranking states.
Golfweek uses 675 voters from seven countries to arrive at its sought–after designation. Criteria includes overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology and the “Walk in the park test,” to gauge if the course is worth four hours of time.
Harbor Club has consistently been on the list for the past decade. The number three designation is the highest ranking the course has received.
The news of the courses comes as no surprise to Lake Oconee residents and golfers. The golf–rich area has always been a haven for residents and a destination point for golf hungry tourists.
“The entire Harbor Club family would like to congratulate our golf course superintendent Jeff Miller and Head golf professional Keith Kelly on earning the praise of the discerning Golfweek ranking panelists,” says Harbor Club General Manager Brandon Matney.
“This recognition will certainly instill a sense of pride in our resident and non–resident club members, plus daily guests who enjoy the course year–round.”
