Inspired by the rise of cocktails following the 18th Amendment and in celebration of the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards, comes this Pomegranate Lemonade that’s sure to shine –
While America was no stranger to the concept of cocktails prior to Prohibition, it was the homemade liquors that followed the 18th Amendment that made mixed drinks explode in popularity during the Roaring 20s.
Moonshine, White Lightning, and Bathtub Gin are tough to drink neat, but mix in some sweet juices, simple syrup, or citrus and you get a smooth mix of flavors that can hide the harshness of homemade liquors.
To represent The Best of Lake Oconee, we asked Ginger Ryser of the Silver Moon (winner of the “Best Martini” category) and Lisa Young (winner of the “Best Bartender” category) to create a concoction worthy of any modern-day speakeasy.
With a nod to the 18th Amendment and the 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards, the “Oconee 18” is a refreshing Pomegranate Lemonade mix that brings together the sweetness of the lemonade with the tartness of the pomegranate for a flavorful and colorful cocktail. It can be served by the glass or pre-mixed in larger batches.
- 1 oz premium vodka
- 2 oz PAMA liqueur
- 2 oz freshly-squeezed lemonade
- Rosemary sprig or lemon twist for garnish
Combine lemonade, pomegranate liqueur, and vodka into a shaker with ice. Shake for 30 seconds and strain into a prepared rocks glass with ice. Garnish with rosemary sprig or lemon twist.
After repealing the 18th Amendment, President Roosevelt celebrated with a martini and quipped, “What America needs now is a drink.”
